Mega Man (Rockman in Japan)
He goes by many names (rockman, blue bomber etc.) but Mega Man is and always be the hero of the series. However he hasn't always been the blue bomber. Rock(which is what he was originally called)'s purpose was to be a helper robot for Dr. Light (his creator). However when Dr. Wily decided to turn on Dr. Light and use his robots to take over the world, Rock offered to be converted into a fighting robot. Thus Mega Man was born. Since then, he has foiled Dr. Wily's evil plots numerous times. But an inner conflict has prevented him from finishing off the evil scientist. His first appearence is obviously Mega Man 1.

Proto Man (Blues in Japan)
Protoman is the brother of Mega Man. Though in the cartoon series, it is depicted that Protoman is evil, he is not in any of the videogames. He typically appears to help Mega Man out in certain spots. When he appears, his classic 'whistling theme song' comes on just before he enters. His first appearence is in Mega Man 3.

Bass (Forte in Japan)
Dr. Wily's answer to Mega Man. Bass is a powerful robot hell bent on finishing Mega Man . In his first appearence in Mega Man 7, he was originally thought to be on the side of good. However he later trashes Dr. Light's lab and you find out that he was created by Dr. Wily. He wants to prove that he is more powerful than Mega Man and he won't let anything get in his way. He also as a dog named treble, which is the counter to Rush.

Dr. Light
Dr. Light is Mega Man's creator and most likely the most intelligent scientist when it comes to the field of robotics. He had built several worker robots that were supposed to help mankind in many ways. But his assistant Dr. Wily had his own ideas and used those very robots in an effort to take over the world. He continues to make new parts and upgrades for Mega Man in his many outings.

Dr. Wily
Wily is the main villan in the series. At first, he was assistant to Dr. Light and helped him create six robots. He then stole the robots and made them cause havok but Mega Man was there to stop him. So far, Mega Man has been able to stop his evil plots every time, but he always comes back to get revenge. It is not known why wily turned mad, but in Mega Man 8 it is said that Wily may have been infected with some 'Evil Energy' that caused him to turn on Dr. Light. However, it is still not known for sure.

Rush (Rash in Japan)
Rush is the Blue Bombers faithful dog who can be used to help Mega Man out of tight situations. His first appearence was in Mega Man 3. He can transform into a submarine, a jet and use his coil to spring Mega Man up to higher gorunds. In a few of the games, he also has the ability to bond to Mega Man and give him the power of flight.

Roll
Roll is the sister of Mega Man. She was created as a household robot by Dr. Light. In a few of the games (such as Mega Man 8), you can purchase items from Roll that will help you in your quests. Other than that, roll does not play a hugely important part in the game series. In the Cartoon series howeverm she was given a larger role (no pun intended) and even fought sometimes.

Mega Man X

Mega Man X (or just X as he is referred to in the series) is of course the main character in the series. X was the first robot capable of thinking and making their own decisions by themselves. But due to this there is a high potential for error, and thus he was sealed away in a capsule by his creator, one Dr. Thomas Light. The capsule would then test his systems for the next 30 years, which would exceed Dr. Lights lifetime. X is eventually discovered by Dr. Cain. When the situation calls for it, X is always ready to fight, though an inner conflict wonders why he must do so.

Zero
Zero is Xs best friend and former partner. He has always been an athority figure to X. Even when X doubted his own powers, Zero had faith in him and he has even sacrificed his life twice (spoiler!) for X. However, armed with his powerful Z-sabre, he always seems to return. His creation is still a mystery, as well as the bulk of his past. Once a maverick, Zero became a hunter after the fateful fight with the then leader of the maverick hunters, Sigma. No one knows for sure, but it is thought that Zero is somehow connected to the origin of the maverick virus.

Sigma
There cant ever be a Mega Man game without a boss, and Sigma is the one for the X series. Once the leader of the maverick hunters, Sigma turned leader of the Mavericks shortly after his fight with Zero. His belief that reploids should wipe out the entire human race is only overshadowed by his hatred for X and Zero. The duo has defeated him numerous times, yet Sigma is hell bent on getting revenge, no matter the cost to himself, the planet or others.

Dr. Cain
The scientist who unearthed X and began to make new robots called reploids based on Xs design. These robots have the ability to think and act on their own accord. When mavericks started to rise, Dr. cain dedicated himself to helping the Maverick Hunters.

Vile
Though he may look like Boba Fett, Vile is a force to be reconed with. Vile is usually seen in his giant mech called the Goliath. X originally destroyed him in the very first game, but he is then ressurected by Dr. Doppler in the third game only to be destroyed again, talk about tough luck. Much like Sigma, he is determined to destroy X, though he has had little success in the past.
