In this section we'll show you the differences between the original Japanese Dragon Ball Z version and the U.S. version; finally it'll be clear why the number of Japanese original episodes is different compared with the American ones (291 vs 276) and we'll also take the opportunity to display the differences between anime and manga in these episodes!
But... we'll have a very special thing to offer you! Dragon Ball Arena will publish some episodes of Saiyans Saga and Freeza Saga completely re-edited: Italian DBZ episodes (they are uncut like the original Japanese) have been English subtitled by us according to the manga text!
That means it could happen, somewhere, that Italian episode dubbing doesn't match with our subtitles!
And now, folks... we only have to say... enjoy! ^__^

Original Episode

Characters

Chichi, Goku, farmer, Raditz, Gohan, Kinton nimbus, Piccolo

Notes
The episode opens with the images of life running quietly on Earth where five years have already passed since when Goku defeated Piccolo at the Tenkaichi tournament final.
Then, from the dark, Raditz spaceship appears... After the title, we meet Chichi and Goku and, soon after, the farmer who faces Raditz. When this one goes away thinking he located Kakaroth, here is the little Gohan who's lost himself in the wood and has to face (^__-) butterflies, birds, lions and....river's falls! Raditz finds Piccolo, instead of Kakaroth, but soon his scouter locates another great power; he lifts up and calculates the distance (this part is missing in U.S. episode), then quickly goes away leaving Piccolo furious to have beeing so afraid in front of this new fighter (also this part has been reduced in the American version)! The episode ends with the narrator's voice who's asking about Saiyans origins while the images are showing a tailed baby in a spaceship...

U.S. Version Episode

Characters

Farmer, Raditz, Chichi, Goku, Piccolo, Kinton nimbus, Gohan, Bulma, Muten, Kuririn, Turtle, granpa Son Gohan, Saiyan warriors, Ohzaru Saiyan

Notes
In U.S. version, the first images of the episode show Raditz spaceship approaching and the farmer who meets him. Then we see Chichi and Goku, and Raditz meeting with Piccolo. Gohan's misadventures have entirely been cut and he only appears when he's safe and sound on a branch of a tree and he's found by his father. Please note that in original episode they put this scene before Raditz meets Piccolo! Then the episode goes on showing Goku and Gohan reaching Kame House. It ends with Raditz catching Gohan after having knocked down Goku.

Manga

Characters

Farmer, Raditz, Piccolo

Notes
DBZ Episode #1 takes place in the manga vol.#17 and is contained in only one chapter titled " A misterious fighter" composed by 14 pages that open with the images of the farmer sighting Raditz' spaceship and end with the Saiyan reaching the place where his scouter has located Goku's power! In the manga we don't meet Goku or Chichi or Gohan and Toriyama didn't describe little Gohan's adventures we see in DBZ anime episode #1. So it's missing the sign of the first manifestation of Gohan's hidden power: in a difficult time, when he's going to risk his own life, Gohan finds himself beeing safe on a branch of a tree above the fall of the river dragging him, in a place he only could reach by flying!

Original Episode

Characters

Raditz, Bulma, Muten, Kuririn, Turtle, Goku, Gohan, Kinton nimbus, grandpa Son Gohan, Saiyan warriors, Ohzaru Saiyan

Notes
The first images show Raditz approaching to the place where his scouter located a great power that should be Kakaroth's (it's only few seconds but they have been cut in U.S. version). Then we see Bulma's arrival to Muten Roshi's island with her helicopter. When she comes into Kame House, Bulma gives Muten a long-time-no-see present, which the old man hopes will include getting a little touch of her breasts, but he's hit on the head. Of course this part has been entirely cut in U.S. version, included the notes about Yamcha and Bulma's fight and about Lunch's departures from Kame House following Tenshinhan.
Then Goku arrives and introduces little Gohan to everybody. Suddenly they feel that someone having huge powers is approaching and here is Raditz too! From this part 'till the end of episode, there are only few little cuts in the dialogue between Raditz and our friends. At the end, Raditz catches Gohan and advises Goku that, if he wanna have back his loved son, he have to kill one hundred Earthlings.

U.S. Version Episode

PAY ATTENTION!!

Episode #1 of Dragon Ball Z U.S. version contains a summary of the first two original anime episodes; it ends just as the original episode #2. So, we'll compare the original DBZ episode #2 with the second part of U.S. version episode #1.

Then the episode goes on showing Goku and Gohan reaching Kame House (Bulma appears when she's already inside Kame House) and Raditz arrival. It ends with Raditz catching Gohan after having knocked down Goku. Compared to the original version, among the little cuts made, it's evident that, when Raditz tells about Saiyans transformation at moonlight, the images of the Ohzaru and the Moon have been placed in back seat, during the same frame dedicated to Raditz who's speaking. In the original version, first the Moon and then the Ohzaru appear in foreground.

Manga

Characters

Raditz, Bulma, Muten, Kuririn, Turtle, Goku, Gohan, Kinton nimbus, Ohzaru Saiyan

Notes
DBZ Episode #2 takes place in the manga vol. #17 and is contained in two chapters titled "Kakaroth" and "Son Goku's past", the first composed by 14 pages and the second one by 15 pages. There are no differences between manga and anime original episode.

Original Episode

Characters

Raditz, Gohan, Goku, Bulma, Muten, Kuririn, Turtle, Kinton nimbus, Piccolo, Chichi

Notes
The episode opens with Raditz remembering to Goku that, if he wanna have back his son, he'll must take on Muten's island the bodies of one hundred Earthlings killed by him. When Muten tells that Goku never could do such a bad thing, Raditz informs everyone that, however, soon all the Earthlings will be destroyed by the three survivor Saiyans; then he takes Gohan away with him. Goku remembers that the tail is Saiyans weak point, but he needs someone's help if he wanna defeat Raditz. When he's thinking that he can also rely on kuririn and Muten, suddenly Piccolo appears and suggests to Goku to team up with him in order to defeat the new enemy. Piccolo's offer of solidarity is obviously temporary, 'cause he doesn't want that those Saiyans interfere with his own plan to conquer the World: when he and Goku will have defeated the three Saiyans, it will be Goku's turn to be eliminated. Goku accepts and they together fly towards the place where Bulma's Dragon radar has localized the Dragon Ball upon Gohan's hat. Meanwhile, even if his scouter signals a power force of 710 localized where Gohan stays, Raditz doesn't believe that such a little child can be so strong and he thinks his device is broken... When he'll notice the arrival of Goku and another power force, he will realize that his scouter perfectly works... The episode ends with Raditz that, after showing what he's able to do, informs Goku and Piccolo that the other two Saiyans survivor are stronger than him...

U.S. Version Episode

PAY ATTENTION!!

DBZ original episode #3 is contained in U.S. version episode #2. So, we'll compare the original DBZ episode #3 with the first (about) 15 minutes of U.S. version episode #2.

Characters
Raditz, Gohan, Goku, Bulma, Muten, Kuririn, Turtle, Kinton nimbus, Piccolo, Chichi

Notes
In U.S. version of episode, there haven't been important cuts: just only a few short cuts, but if we reunite all of them, we realize that the original story is longer about three minutes. The most important part, that is missing in American version, happens just after first Raditz attack: Goku and Piccolo are quite astonished in front of such great speed and power, and Raditz, just to oppress them much more, tells that the other two survivors of his race are stronger than him. U.S. version episode #2 goes on showing part of the story of original episode #4: Goku trying to reassure Gohan and Raditz who, in the next attack coming from his enemies, hits them with two powerful energy beams. Goku manages to avoid it, Piccolo is hit and loses his arm... but you will be able to note that only in the next episode!

Manga

Characters

Raditz, Gohan, Goku, Bulma, Muten, Kuririn, Turtle, Kinton nimbus, Piccolo

Notes
DBZ episode #3 takes place in the manga vol. #17 and is contained in two chapters titled "A common enemy" and "Fight against Raditz" each of them composed by 14 pages. There are no big differences between DB manga and anime's content, except Chichi's appearance and in original version and in U.S version of the anime episode while she doesn't appear in the manga.

Original Episode

Characters

Raditz, Goku, Piccolo, Gohan, Bulma, Muten, Kuririn, Chichi

Notes
The first images of the episode show Goku and Piccolo who are a little scared thinking about the other two Saiyans are much stronger than Raditz; then Goku asks where Gohan is hidden and, after having reassured his son, he and Piccolo attack their enemy. But this one is much faster and stronger and hits them with two powerful energy beams. Goku manages to avoid it, not Piccolo who loses his arm but says that anyhow he's able to fight... In the meanwhile, on a flying vehicle, Bulma, Kuririn and Muten are approaching where the Dragon Ball of Gohan's hat had been localized (this part is entirely missing in the manga). The scene opens again with the battle field where Piccolo tells Goku to try distracting Raditz and engaging him in a fight to let him prepare his new technique, the Makankosappo. However Raditz manages to avoid this powerful attack that only just grazes him at the shoulder. When Raditz is going to terminate Piccolo with one of his powerful energy beam, Goku, behind him, takes advantage of his weak point, catching and squeezing his tail. But Goku is so ingenuous that he trusts his bad brother's entreaties and set him free. Soon Raditz jumps on him and hits him very hard (here, in U.S. version, some frames are missing). Now the episode shows Chichi at home waiting for his dears to come back (also this part is missing in the manga); then soon the images return to show Goku's suffering face and his howls of pain while Raditz is pitiless towards him. When the villain is going to hit Goku with the mortal blow, Gohan's hidden power (that reveals itself when events cause his anger) comes out and the child breaks the capsule where he was shut up and rushes to his father's rescue.

U.S. Version Episode

PAY ATTENTION!!

DBZ original episode #4 is contained in U.S. version episodes #2 and #3. So, we'll compare the original DBZ episode #4 with the last (about) 3 minutes of U.S. version episode #2 and the first (about) 13 minutes of U.S. version episode #3.

Characters of episode no.2
Raditz, Gohan, Goku, Bulma, Muten, Kuririn, Turtle, Kinton nimbus, Piccolo, Chichi

Characters of episode no.3
Raditz, Goku, Piccolo, Bulma, Muten, Kuririn, Gohan, Chichi

Notes
In U.S. version, this part of the fight against Raditz is entirely showed, even if shared between episodes #2 and #3, except some short cuts where Raditz is hardly hitting with his foot Goku who is knocked down and some frames, showing his suffering face, are missing. The U.S. version of episode #3 goes on showing the first part of original episode #5: Gohan hitting Raditz and this one who, just in the moment when is going to kill the child, is caught by the shoulder and kept by Goku who yells Piccolo to charge another Makankosappo!

Manga

Characters

Raditz, Piccolo, Goku, Gohan

Notes
DBZ episode #4 takes place in the manga vol. #17 and is contained in three chapters titled "An unimaginable terror", "Piccolo at the counterattack" and "Makankosappo!" each of them composed by 14 pages. In DBZ anime, Piccolo and Goku's fight against Raditz is rather faithfully showed respect to the manga tables, except for the dialogues: in the comics, these are a little more harsh than in the anime... at least in the Italian version and American too! (Surely in the original Japanese version, DBZ anime have dialogues more faithful compared with the manga!) The images showing Chichi at home (just about 40 seconds in the anime, both the original and American versions ) are entirely missing, so like the part with Kuririn, Muten and Bulma approaching on a flying vehicle.
